Works For Me Wednesday- Wizard of Oz

September 22, 2009

wfmw Got plans for tonight? I have an idea for you. Oh my goodness, I think this is the coolest thing ever! The Wizard of Oz is being released back to the big screen in high definition. It is the 70th anniversary and to celebrate, the classic movie has been remastered and is being shown at theaters across the country. 70 years and the movie is absolutely timeless. I never grow tired of watching it.

This time around the movie will be shown after an introduction by Robert Osborne who is the host of Turner Classic Movies and will share stories about the movie. Then there will be an exclusive viewing of “To Oz! The Making of a Classic” with interviews with the Munchkins, outtakes, and home movies of the cast.

Legend has it that one of the Munchkins from the movie lived in my hometown. Someone told me this while I was working in the kid’s department at our local department store. A “little person” (is that the correct term? I seriously do not want to offend anyone) came in to shop for pants. He was the nicest man and when he left someone told me that he was one of the original Munchkins for the land of Oz. I don’t know if it was remotely true, but I loved the movie a little more after that encounter.

I have loved this movie for so long. When I was in elementary school I dressed up as Dorothy for a storybook character day complete with red shoes and a stuffed “Toto.” A few years back I found a Dorothy costume at a garage sale complete with red shoes and the cycle continues. My girls have seen bits and pieces of the movie, but scare easily so obviously the Wicked Witch is out. But I can’t wait until they get a little older and we can sing along and dream of being Dorothy together.

So on Wednesday, September 23 at 7 pm head to your local theater to check out Wizard of Oz. To find out what theater near you is playing the movie, enter your zip code over here. This is playing on the big screen for one night only so get those babysitters called and have a date night with the hubby.

What is your favorite classic movie or thing about Wizard of Oz? I just find “Over The Rainbow” scene tough to beat :)

Thanks to We Are That Family for hosting Works For Me Wednesday.

How neat! What a great movie, too. I wish we were in the states to catch that…I think my girls would love watching it. I should add that to our DVD collection, but it would be so cool to watch it in the theater!

    Interesting :)

I’m still wondering if that suicide in the background is true or not. I can’t find an original copy of the movie.

I saw WIZARD OF OZ on the sign of my local theatre and said, “I have go to call about this!” Thank you for coming to my rescue!

THIS IS MY FAVORITE MOVIE. Wish I could go see it with you. I’ll be out of town. *pout*.

I was Dorothy for Hween once & my brother was the scarecrow. My mom made my ruby slippers w/red sequins. We had a parade at school and for the rest of the year you could find red sequins thru out the school!

And I think I can quote the whole thing, too.

Back in July, my brother & nephew were involved in a community theater production of “The Wizard of Oz.” It wasn’t movie-quality (duh) but it was enjoyable! My brother was the Cowardly Lion and was FANTASTIC. Seriously. And my nephew was a munchkin and a flying monkey, which wasn’t much of a reach for him. :-)

I am so gonna see if Luke wants to go!
It’s ironic though, we could about buy the movie when it comes out for what the tickets would cost. But still, how many times do you get the chance to see it in theaters?
