Works For Me Wednesday- Summer Recipe Edition

June 30, 2009

wfmw Let the record show that I am a red meat girl. There is not a vegetarian bone in my body. I like steak and I like it medium rare. But I am also relatively smart about what I eat. Well, when I am not pregnant. Pregnancy = all food bets are off. But normally, we try not to eat red meat more than once a week. Which saddens me greatly during summer grilling season because hot dogs, hamburgers and a steak on the grill are heavenly.

Really for us summer is about the grill and fresh veggies from the farmer’s market. Or from our garden if any survive my black thumb. This year isn’t looking so hot. My garden is where veggies come to die. Anyway, we love grilling. I love the smell, love the taste and love how my kitchen doesn’t have to heat up and make the house even hotter. Plus grilling seems to take a lot less energy somehow and energy is in short supply around here during the dinner hours.

So what do the first two paragraphs have to do with each other. Well, a few years back, I stumbled upon a recipe for a turkey burger. The red meat lover in my laughed at the thought that a burger made from something other than cow could taste good, but for some reason we gave it a try. And were hooked. But not all turkey burger recipes are created equal. I have tried many, many since then and am always left disappointed at the lack of flavor and the tendency toward dryness. Somehow this one is very flavorful and moist (least favorite word in the English language, but I can’t think of another adjective this late in the evening. It won’t happen again). Best of all, it comes from Cooking Light so it is healthy.Fire up the grill and enjoy!

Asian Style Turkey Burgers

  • 1  pound  ground turkey
  • 1/3  cup  finely chopped onion
  • 3  tablespoons  finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 2  tablespoons  Worcestershire sauce
  • 2  tablespoons  minced green bell pepper
  • 1  tablespoon  low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1  tablespoon  cold water
  • 2  teaspoons  grated peeled fresh ginger
  • 1/2  teaspoon  salt
  • 1/4  teaspoon  pepper
  • 2  garlic cloves, minced
  • Combine the first 11 ingredients in a large bowl. Divide turkey mixture into 4 equal portions, shaping each into a 3/4-inch-thick patty. Place a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat until hot {we use a grill pan in the winter and a grill in the summer}. Add patties; cook 5 minutes on each side or until done. Serve on buns.

I can’t stand turkey burgers. My husband eats them all the time when he goes to his brothers for bbq’s. They’re disgusting. To me anyway.
