Works For Me Wednesday- Say Uncle

February 17, 2009

works-for-me-wednesday   You ever had one of those days? Ever had one of those weeks, months, years? The days where the tears reside just under the surface for the whole day waiting to spill out. The days where you spend the entire day giving time outs. Except they are to yourself. The days where 5 o’clock when the hubby comes home can’t come fast enough. An then he is late….

I had one of those days today. For no particular reason. The kids weren’t being awful, I didn’t get a speeding ticket, the toilet didn’t overflow. I just had a day where my breaking point was particularly low. And despite a nap and an aspirin the splitting headache wasn’t going anywhere.

Some days you just gotta give yourself a break. Let the TV babysit for a while and don’t feel a lick of guilt about it. Throw the kids (not literally please) at the hubby and retreat up to your bedroom for a bit when he gets home. Hopefully he gets the hint and makes dinner and tells the kids not to disturb you as my wonderful hubby did today. Watch fluffy TV or read a trashy magazine. Take a long bubble bath. Just give yourself a break. If you have parents close by, call on them. That trusted friend…well she should know what to do the second she hears your voice.

Truly ladies, let’s stop acting like Super Mom and cut ourselves some slack. Sometimes life is just too much and we need a break. If your family hasn’t learned it by now, if Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. You can embroider that one on  a wall hanging and prominently display it on the mantle, lest anyone forget. But if you’re anything like me, you won’t let them.

This post isn’t meant to be a downer, just a moment of being real, cause that is where I am at today. However, if you want to laugh your booty off and didn’t join me yesterday, here is something a little more light hearted. It is one of my personal faves.

And for more tips, head over to Rocks In My Dryer.

True that. Given that it’s tax season and my hubby’s working super long hours, I have a LOT of those days lately – so when my mom calls up saying she needs a dose of my kiddos, I graciously hand them over.

Well said! Women need to hear this more often. But I did have to laugh at the 5 O’clock part, since here in NYC that is unfortunately considered early to get home from work :(

I so totally agree! We need to cut ourselves some slack – motherhood is a 24/7 job, and it’s exhausting. A little quiet time & personal care go a LONG way towards keeping a mother sane!

Thanks. I so needed to hear that!

It’s been a hard day over here as well. My hubby’s still at work though. I just put the kids to bed (a little earlier than normal but definitely necessary for mama’s sanity.) I don’t even feel guilty anymore now that I’ve read your post :)
Thanks for reminding me I’m not alone in this!

Oh and btw I did laugh my booty off at yesterday’s post. Bahahahaha. You two sound like my hubby and I.

    Thanks for keepin’ it real!

Boys can have those days too. And Sister did I ever. I teach the kids and my wife works outside the home. I certainly had a day where my breaking point was particularly low, as well. Thr good news, is that it passed. Here’s hoping tomorrow is better, for both of us!

What a wonderful reminder! We got back last night from a long weekend away. I am happy to say that I didn’t allow myself to feel guilty this morning when I let my kids watch TV. This post just affirms that sometimes you need to make exceptions to the rule so you can stay sane!

YES!! I’ve never understood why so many women have such a hard time letting themselves off the hook. Maybe I just have more of a lazy/selfish streak than most. But when I feel one of those days coming on, I just go with it. I know it’ll only make things worse if I fight it and try to be all uber-productive.

I like Christin’s word “transparent” but I use the word “authentic” more often. I try to PLAN days off, or hours off, or minutes off – if that’s all I can take/get. Basically, I need some solitude on a regular basis or I turn into a puddle of goo.

Yesterday was one of those days for me. No amount of Coke and brownies could have redeemed the day. Luckily the kids weren’t too rowdy and The Calm One did take over for me. Until I realized he was having a terrible day too. Then I had to suspend my escape ’cause he never has those kinds of days.

When you figure out how both parents can escape at the same time (and not necessarily to the same place, if you catch my drift) would you let me know? We tried our best to console ourselves with a couple of dvr’d episodes of LOST and potato chips. If only we’d had a pint or two of Chubby Hubby
