I’m back baby!! With my ideas, my wit, my bad grammar and spelling. Thanks for bearing with me the last couple of days while I try and get my brain back. I thought I would come back with a tip that has been making the school adjustment slightly tolerable. I say slightly because the only thing that would make it fully tolerable is if school started at 10 so I could sleep in.
But seeing as though I am the least morning person around, I try and sleep in as late as humanly possible on school mornings. The key to that my friends is doing everything that can possibly be done the night before. So I might as well be in school too cause I have revived the nighttime routine. I set out my clothes and pack Lily’s lunch. She has to get her backpack ready and any “homework” put in it. Any errands that need to be run? List has to be made out and put in purse night before. Have to drop something off somewhere? Goes in the car before I go to bed. If I could, I would shower, put on makeup, get dressed and then lay perfectly still so that I could pop out of bed 5 minutes before I have to leave. Alas, my hair doesn’t make it through the night. I wake up looking like Cousin It.
This is probably one of those “duh” Works For Me Wednesdays, but in case you are running around in the morning and waking up so early that when you called God you got the answering machine, sleep in tomorrow and do it tonight. It’s like that anti-Scarlett O’Hara.

I have been doing this for years now and it works so well for me. We don’t have any kids in school yet, but whenever we do need to be out of the house early (and by early I mean before noon), I try to do as much as possible the night before. It clears my mind in the morning and I can also get so much more done when I’m not trying to hurry two little ones along!
(I’m on mat leave right now, but when I was working part-time shifts as an RN, I would wake around 3am, stressed about my shift and unable to sleep. So I would get up and get all ready, then climb back in bed and sleep for another hour or so. Hair was just going in a ponytail anyways, so it didn’t really matter!)

I need to get into this habit. I’m usually still in pjs until 9 or so unless I’m going somewhere.

This is a great idea. It’s also good to have a morning routine for me – like make my bed, take a shower, get dressed (somewhat like FlyLady, I guess), because I’m much more likely to get things done.

Saturday night is bath night for the kids so the bathroom is all mine and Mr Lemon’s on Sunday morning. It has really cut down on the frustration and the needing to get up before the crack of dawn to get everyone presentable.

I completely agree! Since my son started kindergarten, I’ve found it’s the only way we can get out of the door in time. There have been some nights that I think I’ll just wait until morning to get things ready…I ALWAYS regret it!

Yes, that would cut down on the stress of the morning. Sometimes I pour the cereal into the bowl for my little guy, then I just need milk for him in the morning.

I do the same thing, except I do it right when the backpacks arrive home. I pull out homework, review papers, sign permission slips and put everything right back into their folders and into the backpack.

I’m totally with you on this one. My husband thinks I’m crazy (well, for more than one reason really) but I stay up just to get a headstart on the morning routine. Crazy, yes but it works for me (too!). =0)

I tell others I’m allergic to mornings. I do so much better at night because I am seriously not a morning person. I wake my children up around 7:30. They get ready, I go back to bed. Around 7:45 I brush my daughers hair, make sure she has her glasses and take the children to school to eat breakfast there cuz they like it. Then, I would go back to bed, if I could. nice to know I’m not the only that would sleep longer if I could. Also get somewhat ready the night before. could probably do more though. THanks for the tip.

you should master the ponytail, and that will save you the time wrestling with your hair. the only MUSTS for me in the morning are teeth and clothes. everything else is optional. I frequently show up at gymboree with bed hair. and you know what? I don’t care even a little. it’s liberating, honestly.
