Works For Me Wednesday- Curb Your Eating

November 19, 2008

I really am the last person who should be giving any weight loss advice since I am still claiming baby weight from my 2 1/2 year old. Truth be told a little of it might be from my 5 year old. I kinda keep figuring I will lose it when I am done having kids. Or when I die. Or when I get the stomach flu. Seriously, if you have it come over and breathe on me cause I think that would get me pretty near my goal weight.

The first part of the problem is that I loathe exercise. The second is that I love food. Bad, fatty, calorie laden food. You see where this is going. Nowhere good. Add onto it a husband who loves to eat from dinner until bedtime and I am really in trouble. Cause the late night eating will get you everytime. Of course he can take off 20 pounds just by spending one five minute session on the treadmill. Stupid men and their weigh loss.

Anyway, I decided to start writing down what I ate during the day and track my calories. Whew, that was ugly. So then I decided to stop eating so much and then track my calories. You know what is weird? When you track your calories, you eat less. Automatically. Cause you know you have to write it down and the guilt will just drive you crazy. Who knew guilt was good for weight loss?

I did it all through Halloween season. Which starts the moment you buy your Halloween candy and lasts until the last bite is eaten from your house (which happened today coincidentally). And I only took like 1 mini twix a day. That is some sort of Halloween miracle. Top that Charlie Brown!!

So, I use Fit Day. You just input the label info and it keeps track of everything. Calories, fat, fiber…If you have read my blog for any length of time, you will not be shocked to learn that I am way over the recommended fiber intake each day. I love me some fiber. But I am low on protein, so I am trying to increase that. It also lets you input your physical activity. If only it let you account for birthing children cause my metabolism would get its butt kicked by the tortoise.

Anyhoo, that is really working for me. Not in a I lost 15 pounds sort of way, but in a I have stopped eating my weight in food every night kinda way. And that is a pretty good thing.

This idea works for me too, but I always try to do it by hand and it’s such a pain. So I will totally check out FitDay – thanks!

I always put off losing weight until I was done having kids, but my LAST baby is 10 months & I am all out of excuses.

I really need to do this. I have been struggling with the same post-baby weight for 4 years and 3 pregnancies. I’ve done it in the past and it really does work. Thanks for the inspiration and the link. I’m going to check it out. It just may be the motivation I need.

Thanks for the tip on Fit Day. I’ve been doing Weight Watchers online since Oct 1st (and lost a little over 10 lbs). I love the online tracking system because it is so accessible and well-organized (as opposed to the spiral notebook I’ve tried to use in the past). However, WW isn’t a permanent way for me to track food (since they obviously won’t let me use it unless I’m paying them). So, I was wondering if there were any other tracking systems online (for FREE!).

I will definitely sign up for it after WW is over. And I totally agree– knowing I’ll have to write it down is often enough of a reason to skip the bad foods! :) Good luck!

I have a love/hate relationship with food journals. I don’t like keeping one, but it really does help! Also, when you feel like munching, drink a glass of water first. Sometimes, doing that & getting busy with the next thing on your to do list is all it takes to keep from munching out. Thanks for the Fit Day tip. I will check it out. Good luck to you!

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to see what it’s all about :)

Thanks! It’s neat to know there’s a site for that. Don’t feel bad – my “baby” is now 7 and just last week I decided to get serious about losing 15 lbs. This will definitely help.

Um, my son is 4. What does that say about me when I blame it all on him?! ;) I also have a late night eater hubby. Who has an annoying habit of saying “Oh, my pants are too big. AGAIN.”

    Hey Jill,

My small group just finished doing a bible study by Dee Brestin called Women of Moderation. It was really good. It opened my eyes as to why I eat sometimes when I am not hungry. I lost 7 1/2 lbs. I strongly suggest it.

You are correct! Writing down what you eat is crucial to weight loss. I even bought myself this really cute notebook so that I would write down my food. It is helping me lose weight… so far I’ve lost 13 pounds.

I have used fit day too, but I like SparkPeople even better – they have a better food database so I don’t always have to manually enter the label info. Plus they have restaurants and *Starbucks* info (my downfall!), so it’s easier to track if you eat out.
