Works For Me Wednesday- Book Club

March 9, 2010

Growing up I pretty much lived in the library. And I read everything that wasn’t nailed down. Even through college and grad school, when I should have been pulling all nighters, I was often curled up in bed with a good book. That is my story mom and I am sticking to it. Honestly I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love reading.

But at some point post babies “She’s Come Undone” became replaced with “Where the Wild Things Are” (I love that book by the way, not knocking it at all). It could also have been squeezed out a bit by this little internet thing and a ridiculous amount of DVR’d shows. Anyway, I really began to miss a good book. Enter book club.

It was started a few years back with a group of moms. Some of us were life long book lovers. Some more trashy beach novel readers. And truth be told it is half book club, half night away from the kids and hubby with a good glass of wine club. But every six weeks we are forced to put down the remote and curl up with a good book.

I haven’t loved every book, but I loved reading every book. Does that make sense? I just love the art of reading. Of escaping and delving into another world and another person’s mind. I love having a grown up conversations about plots, character development and allegories. I look forward to book club night every month. And I look forward to cracking open the spine of a good book.

Are you in a book club? If not, start one. If so, what good book have you read lately?

I’ve been wishing I could be in a book club for a while now. I’m like you. I can’t wait to dive into a new book. I think I would enjoy it even more if I could discuss it, too. I don’t know that our small town has a book club at all, but I’ll have to look into that!

I’ve been invited to some book clubs in the past, but have never been able to make it. Your post encourages me to say “yes” the next time the invitation comes along. In the mean time, are there any good books you’d recommend??

I LOVED Time Travelers Wife. Just read Peace Like a River which is a secular book with a lot of Christian themes so that is cool. Also LOVED Book Thief

I LOVE my book club. We’ve been together for over 15 years, and it’s one of the highlights of my month.

I was in a book club the first few years we lived in Nashville. Sadly, I was really young and when everyone else started having babies and wanted to talk about poop all the time, I dropped out.

Talking books is a passion for me. Is there some way I can make money doing it? Hehe.

I’m not gonna lie, we have some poop talk. A hazard of the SAHM crowd.

Our mom’s club has a book club and I joined about 2 1/2 years ago. It combines all of my loves: books, friends, fellowship, and good food! I love it. Sometimes we have theme food (Swedish food from Ikea when we read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). I go even if I haven’t read the book, which has only happened with books I didn’t like and put down (American Wife, Eat Pray Love). We even have extra movie nights if our book was made into a movie. I love these ladies and it would be the last thing I would give up if I had to cut back on activities. We are currently reading The Book of Bright Ideas, but I haven’t started it yet. You can find me on GoodReads.com if you want to chat more on books:)

I’ve been in a book club for over five years and LOVE it. We meet the first Sunday night of the month and have read all kinds of stuff. I love that it pushes me to read things I wouldn’t normally pick up and forces me to read at least one adult book a month. Love, love, love book club.

I recently joined a book club with a diverse group of girls: some married, some single, some with kids, some without. We spend the first hour socializing and the second hour discussing the book. We just read ” The Story of Edgar Sawtelle” by David Wroblewski. It was great – I definitely recommend it!
