I have a new hobby. And it brings me immense amounts of joy. I decided in 2010 we would start making our own bread. And by we, I mean me. So we haven’t bought bread in 2010. And I don’t intend to ever again. Cause once you go homemade you can’t go back. Or something.
And you also can’t stop eating it. When this started we were polishing off entire loaves in one day. We have simmered down a bit and are now consuming a normal amount. But it is not helping my massive carb addiction. This stuff is amazing.
Mainly I am making breads from Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day. It is written by the same peeps that did Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day
. I was drawn to the “healthy” one so I am trying recipes from that one first. And I have not been disappointed. They are easy. Super easy. No kneading involved (apparently what isn’t easy- writing non-fragmented sentences). And the crusts come out crusty and the middle is soft. And right out of the oven….. dang, now I just want some bread. Slathered in butter. Is there anything better than that?
But I have tried some other breads too. Some more traditional breads that require kneading and rising and rising again.. And there is something super therapeutic about it. First there is theĀ kneading. The repetitive nature of shaping the dough just does something to you. Since I’m not handy, I don’t make anything with my hands. And cooking doesn’t give you that either. But bread making does. It takes a long time. A lot of waiting. And I don’t know about your life, but mine could stand some slowing down at times. Some patience and some waiting.
I am loving my journey towards more whole foods and thus far, bread making has been my favorite part by far. I honestly can’t wait to make a new loaf each week. So don’t be intimidated by it. Especially with the 5 minute breads. Give it a try. I think you will be shocked at how delicious it is.

I’ve just started making my own bread and I’ve been loving it. I want to go completely homemade and not buy bread anymore as well. This week my daughter wanted hot dogs for dinner so I bought the dogs and not the buns because I want to try my hand at making them. =) I’ve heard about that Artisan Bread book before and I’m gonna have to get it. The book I have is Bread Machine Baking and I’ve been tweaking the recipes to bake in the oven.

The Artisan book has a hotdog and hamburger bun recipe. I haven’t tried it yet, but that would be fun.

We make our own too and have for awhile. We use a bread machine but apparently they aren’t made for frequent use (every other day) and we’ve broken about 3 of them so far.

So I’ve made my fair share of handmade bread between machines too. Isn’t it great knowing what is in your bread. Just look at a bread label. It’s shocking all the crap they try to squeeze into plain old bread.

Impressive! I have a bread maker but haven’t used it in years! It came with a recipe book and a few weeks ago, I got up the urge to try and make a whole wheat bread. It had some types of flour I had never heard of before, so I’m glad to find your recipes. I’ll have to try them

Jill, I too got hooked on that Artisan Bread in 5 Min a Day and Al and I would consume an entire rustic loaf or almost each time. Some Canadian friends said that their flour and yeast is different (I’ll buy the flour difference but to me yeast is yeast) so they brought me some of their flour and yeast this fall. Once again I’ve been baking bread as my scales can confirm. Makes great toast too, eh?
