When Cleaning Goes Wrong

July 21, 2008

Since starting Flylady a while back, I have pretty much just started deleting all email from her (ENOUGH WITH THE TESTIMONIALS!!) and fallen back to my lackadaisical cleaning ways (triple word score, thank goodness for spell check). The one thing I have tried to retain however, is to do some routine cleaning on every Monday. I am holding on by a thin thread. But I figure even if I only get it done once a month that it still 10 times a year more often than before that my sheets are getting changed. Oh, I exaggerate (a little).

So today was change sheets, dust, wipe down counter tops, sweep and vacuum day. I tried in vain to convince Lily that dusting was oh so fun cause it worked one before, but today…not so much. Frankly she was of much better use distracting her little sister so I let her off the hook. And only one glass got broken during the vacuuming so I would say all in all, it was a success.

Do you ever have those days where cleaning leads you down a rabbit hole and suddenly you discover that nothing in your life will be right until you rearrange the entire room? Maybe even reorganize a closet and make a donation pile of all your maternity clothes while you’re at it. The bummer is this usually strikes while one is, in fact, pregnant. I think they call it nesting. So hang onto those maternity clothes at least until a good 3 months after the baby pops out cause unless you are Nicole Kidman you will still be wearing them at that point.

As a quick digression, they released photos of Nicole today a mere 2 weeks after having a baby and she is back in jeans with a midriff baring top. There are words for these pictures, but this is a family friendly blog. I should also note that US Weekly is a bit trashy and of course I have better things to do with my time than read such things, but People.com seems to be down today so I was forced to read it for my celebrity fix. Cause that is way classier. And I needed a break from War and Peace.

So anyway, today while cleaning I decided that I really didn’t like where my piano was. Now let me be clear, I haven’t liked where my piano was since the piano movers delivered it and put it there. Did you catch that part? A piano typically requires hired men to come move it into your house where you want it to go. Not too many 5′2″ semi petite and very unmuscular women are employed in the piano moving profession. And there is a reason for that my friends.

Although apparently I am strong enough to get it away from the wall and halfway moved across the room to the other wall I wanted it on. Then I simply could not move it another inch. Possible because while sitting down with my back against the piano I could no longer reach the wall I was pushing against with all my might. At this point, my two adorable children show up and discover a piano in the middle of the room. And what does one do with a piano in the middle of the room? Apparently pound on it’s keys with all your might. So now I have a piano in the middle of the room and a splitting headache. Good times.

So I call my mom for reinforcements and I am sad to say that an almost 60 year old woman had much more success at moving the piano than I did. I was helping of course, but who am I kidding, she kicked my butt. So the piano is in its rightful place and all is right with the world again. And I am pretty sure this is God trying to tell me that I have no business cleaning. And when you hear the voice of God, you really must obey.

Today I cleaned the windows (inside and out, thank you very much), vacuumed, scrubbed sinks, etc… Tonight I look at my clean windows as the evening sun is shining through them and realize they look better than before, but they still look like crap. WTF??? Guess someone is telling me to hire professionals.

Cleaning ALWAYS gets me in these crazy moods… closet reorganization, toy removal, furniture re-arranging. And there is never a big strong man around to help. What’s with that?

    Cheers!
    Jamie

if its possible i “nest” during PMS. God help us all when I actually get pregant! I might even make house calls – care to be on my speed dial? ;)

Not offically of course, but i swear i have OCD. which is why when i was moving i had to make all of my hangers in the closet face the same way. as if i didn’t have enough unpacking/cleaning to do, it was manditory for me to sleep well at night that the tags on all of my shirts be pointed toward the hallway.

I can definitely relate! I have to fight the urge to rearrange everything as I’m cleaning. Little things, not a big deal. Heavy furniture, need hubby’s help.

Yes, I have those days. I decide that these couches in the family room would look much better in the living room, and NO, I’m not going to wait until I have people over the age of 6 around to help me move them, I need it done NOW.

I feel ya about fly lady! I’ve tried to unsubscribed and I am still getting the emails. Apparently, I didn’t do something right but now I have a filter set so they go directly into their own folders. I just couldn’t keep up with the emails or bear to just delete them like she suggests!

I was a Flylady addict a few years ago. Those were the good years according to my husband. He misses her influence on my cleaning ways. I have totally slacked and it saddens me. Lackadaisical would be putting it mildly. Good for you to do your Weekly Home Blessing even if you did get a bit sidetracked. :)

Piano is a musical instrument and it is played by means of a keyboard that produces sound by striking steel strings with felt hammers. There are different kinds of piano covers present in the market to protect your pianos.

LOL I could completely see myself doing all of that.. Even when not pregnant (but epsecially when I am!) I get those urges to just clean all of a sudden and just HAVE to do it.. usually stuff I shouldn’t be tackling lol. Or the rest of the house goes crazy with the kids running loose but that one project I did looks great!
