Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy a little “Wheels on the Bus” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider” from time to time. But we have some CD’s that keep getting “lost” if you catch my drift because Lily insists on listening to an annoying off pitch woman sing the ABCs on too many times. We are lucky that our town has several good Christian radio stations to listen to, but every once in a while I like to listen to the “regular” stations just to hear something a bit more hip and modern and I don’t like to explain to my 4 year old why a girl “kissed a girl and liked it” or what bringing “sexyback” means.
Enter Disney Block Party. The new soundtrack of my life. Let’s do a quick run down shall we?
- Disney Block Party: Favorite Playhouse Disney artists singing all sorts of Disney songs your kid probably already knows. Even Wayne Brady!! Little Mermaid and Mary Poppins are represented which makes it an instant favorite around here. Several of the artists are going on tour in the appropriately named Disney Music Block Party Tour possibly coming to a city near you. Sadly not that near me.
- Here Come The 123s: I had heard that They Might Be Giants was putting out some great kid music, and now I am wondering why I have suffered so long listening to lame kids music when this was out there for the listening. I will completely admit these songs are getting in my head and not in a bad, annoying way. The best part is that the set comes with a DVD with the coolest little music videos ever. I hate to play favorites, but these guys win hands down.
- Rhyming Circus: Ralph’s World is another artist I am late to discovering despite raves from some of my mommy friends. So clever and I am tellin’ you, I could listen to this stuff when my kids aren’t even around!! Hello, the man has a song called “Folsom Daycare Blues.”
- Juice Box Heroes: The Imagination Movers are kind of a rock/hip-hop group singing to toddlers and preschoolers about going to sleep in their own bed, taking your medicine and sibling rivalry. I am just going to keep this CD in the player and pushing the appropriate song whenever a problem arises.
- Choo Choo Soul: Lily loves this one, but I must confess I haven’t listened to it as much. But it comes with a DVD with 11 music videos on it and I am learning the music videos are a big selling point to the kiddos. And Lily really loves this one and has excellent taste in music.
So there you go. Kids music that’s like adult music except it’s about math and brushing your teeth. And really shouldn’t Coldplay sing a bit more about dental hygiene?

I hear you about radio music, maybe I’m just odd but I think that the popular stuff they play on the radio is some of the lamest new music out there. It’s all overly produced and layered and it all has the same hip hop/dance beat.
When I was young I had these two Disney movie song CDs that I just about played to death, they had all the major songs from the animated features and even some of the live ones like the Candle on the Water song from Pete’s Dragon. Great stuff.
They Might Be Giants is awesome, especially the Flood album (who doesn’t love the song Particle Man?). They have a free podcast on their web site too.

We also love They Might Be Giant’s “Here come the ABC’s” around here. Another fun artist to check out is Laurie Berkner (her website is her name.com). Clare has also sucked me into Hannah Montana lately…it’s not too bad.

For The Kids. Great stuff by artists you have heard of. Just wait until you get “The Poop Song” stuck in your head. But a seriously great set of albums (there is more than 1). It’s important for kids to understand that poop goes in the potty and not on their sister. Good times.
My TILT is similarly related today.

We need to get the Disney Block Party. I love Veggie Tales, the kids have personalized ones and get a kick out of Bill and Larry signing their names. We also love Moose Tunes for Kids. The Marshmallow Moose and others are quite catchy. Constant favs in our house (because MOM loves them) are the Annie and Little Mermaid Soundtracks.

Here’s my most successful kids music ever. It came ont in 1971, and I used it when I babysat. I listened to it all through university. Once I played it for my kids at ages 3 and 4, they addored it. They are now 16 and 15, and still love it as much as their little brother, who’s 7 and still likes it. It’s The Point by Harry Nilsson, and it tells the story of Oblio, the only boy without a point on his head in The Land of Point, and his dog, Arrow. There’s a massive lesson for self-esteem in it, but it doesn’t get in the way of great songs, tunes and a story that captivates. It was a movie of the week in the ’70s and you can get the DVD. You might also know Nilsson by his song Coconut, “Put de lime in the coconut, ‘n’ drink ‘em both up…”
I love it still!

That being said, I’ve got to show some love for Andy and Anne’s work with the Discovery Village music from our church. That’s some great music right there, and needs to be internationally renown….
