Parenting 101

I am not a great one at memorizing scripture. I’m more one of those “it’s some verse about forgiveness in one of the Gospels…maybe Luke?” kind of people. I have been in bible studies where you are supposed to memorize scripture and I always give it a good shot. But in the end I can maybe spout it out for a day and then I go back to that “some verse about the tongue…maybe in James?” kind of person.

My kids are awesome at scripture memory. They are both in Christian school so they regularly memorize scripture as part of their classes. Lily practically tackles whole chapters and I stand in awe since I can barely get a half a verse. Hannah is still little so she more tackles a verse at a time. Again, that seems to be better than anything I am accomplishing.

I also know that as a good Christian parent I should probably be being more intentional about using scripture in my parenting. I don’t say that sarcastically. I would really like to be better at this. I keep meaning to buy Seeds of Worship a CD that comes highly recommended to help families memorize scripture through song. I figure since I can remember the words to every Top 40 hit from 1983 on, this might come in helpful. And we do a LOT of singing in this house. Music is probably one of the main ways we connect with God around here.

Since I don’t yet have the CD, I think we will just go with some straight up scripture memory. So after much scriptural study and meditation, I have landed on the first verse we are going to tackle with the kiddos. From the book of wisdom no less. We are going to start with Proverbs 30:17

The eye that mocks a father, that scorns obedience to a mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures.

It has a nice catchy ring to it and I figure I can reinforce it by pointing out birds in the sky whenever the kids get out of line. Something to the effect of, “You need to watch that tone of voice missy, I see some birds circling up above.” What do you think? Oh and book deal people and those looking for parenting speakers? Have your people talk to my people.

  2. I love it when you find those gems! And that one sure is. Now if someone could please tell me where to find a verse that says,”Eat your vegetables and great joy will be yours forever” I’d be eternally grateful!!

Wow – we’ve been doing AWANA for 3 years now and I can’t believe that they haven’t gotten that verse yet!

There’s a God Rocks- Bibletoons CD that also has verses set to music. My kids LOVE it- and they really do get stuck in your head.

Thanks for cracking me up this early in the morning :) .

  4. I love it. Maybelle isn’t so hot at the memorization either, but she did tell us about Paul’s conversion. “First, he was named Saul. He was a STINKER. Then, he went down the road, and got stopped, and got mud in his eyes, and then he got it washed, and he was Paul. And he was nice”

I’m very excited to see how your new technique works for you.

  6. Perfect! I love it. My mom would always say that if we stuck out our lower lip in a pout, a bird would come perch on it. And probably poop on it. Maybe she didn’t say that last part. We may have made that up ourselves. But still, birds are a good deterrent, I think.

P.S. I also have been meaning to get a Seeds of Worship CD!

I may or may not have both Seeds CDs… ;) And it’s possible that they’re really quite good. Coming from a huge judge of kids’ music, that’s pretty impressive.

  12. What a great thing to do as a family! Can I just say that I’m the same kind of scripture memorizer as you are. Well, I should say “was.” A few months ago, a friend who memorizes like a mad woman, talked to me about how she memorizes books of the Bible. Yes, books! She starts with two verses a day (Mon-Fri) and then reviews during the weekend. I’ve started doing this. And there’s something about memorizing in chunks that helps this girl who has a horrible memory (me) remember scripture. It’s in context so that helps. Knowing what came before and after a section helps too….kind of like telling a story. Ok…sorry for the looooong comment. Just wanted to share.
