Once a Daddy’s Girl, Always a Daddy’s Girl

  I know I have said it before, but it bears repeating. I have the best dad on the planet. Oh I know you think you do, but you would be wrong. And actually my hubby is a fantastic dad to me girls, but he isn’t my daddy so I will wait for my girls to get a blog and tell you how awesome he is as their dad. Today, on my dad’s 60th birthday I am going to tell you how awesome mine is.

For the longest time whenever someone asks me who my hero is, I always say my dad. Not some sport’s player, actress or politician. My dad. In today’s world everyone uses their parental upbringing as an excuse to be crappy to everyone around them and pass the crappy down from generation to generation. My dad didn’t have much of a dad. He was around, but not a great dad or husband. Yet my dad has been great on both accounts. Not perfect of course, but as I said before, the best that I know.

My dad never shied away from telling me he loved me. He was never remotely distant or afraid to give me a big ole hug and kiss. And although he and my brother shared a love of all things sports and I couldn’t play any sports for the life of me, he attended every pathetic softball game and cross country meet I performed pathetically at. Not too mention the recitals, musicals and concerts that I actually was good at.

Every little girl just wants the love and attention of their daddy. And in my experience, the ones who didn’t get it went and found it in a whole host of dysfunctional ways. I am so grateful that it was always there for me. I had no idea that it wasn’t that way in every one’s home and totally took that for granted. I am so thankful I married a man who gets how important his role is.

So I am an official daddy’s girl. And I’m OK with that. I am even OK with the fact that although I spent a lot of my life with my daddy wrapped around my finger, I have pretty much had to cede that role to the new little girls in his life. It is pretty hard to compete with his granddaughters. But I must admit, watching him love on them is totally worth it.

Happy Birthday to the best daddy (and Papa) in the whole world. Love you more than silly words on a blog could ever convey.
