It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas

December 1, 2008

I am one of those people who firmly believes your house should be decorated for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. Not a minute before, not a minute after. Outside lights too. Even if it is a blizzard and 30 below. Actually I can say that cause that is the hubby’s job. And I really crack the whip around here.

So our tree is up and looking beautiful. Which means I spend my time yelling “Don’t touch the tree” 548 times a day. And we appear to be the only ones on our street with outside lights on. Which is wonderful because we just got 7 inches of snow. Normally that would not be something to get excited about, but the lights look so pretty and up until Dec. 25, I actually enjoy a snow-covered landscape. Well, in moderation. Which rarely occurs here. When it snows…it snows.

Here in “Snow Hell”, MI (as I affectionately call it), we have two of those radio stations that play Christmas music around the clock. Which I enjoy. After Thanksgiving. When the Christmas season officially starts. Now I expect retail establishments to start playing it in July, right around the time they put up the Christmas displays and put out those annoying Santas that shake their hips and sing “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree.” But the radio stations are really supposed to hold out until Thanksgiving.

Not this year. They started playing Christmas music right around Halloween. Halloween? Living in a place where snow is more than possible anytime from Halloween to Mother’s Day, I don’t want to hear “Let It Snow” in October. And if they insist on doing so, I insist they send over a fat guy in a red suit on Halloween to bring me a big ole sack full of money. To buy me one of those “happy lights” to get me through Feb, Mar, and April.

ha ha! I had a co-worker who loved Christmas music so much, she just couldn’t wait to start playing it, and finally would give in and start listening…in July or August!!! Around October she was burnt out on it!
I’m also in the Day after Thanksgiving camp. BUT, my hubby knew he was going to be busy the weekend after Thanksgiving, and really, Thankgiving was awfully late this year. So, we put up the lights the weekend before Thanksgiving. Heresy, I know!

I’m a day after thanksgiving person too! We’re all Christmas here too. And you’re not the only one telling little people to “not touch the tree!”

Our lights on our pre-lit tree are not working…so my hubby has spent the last two nights testing bulbs…who knows if we will ever get decorations put on! So sad.

A sign of the economics of our time. A local business in our small town had a huge banner over it’s building: “Christmas Time is Here!”. Did I mention it was put up two weeks BEFORE Halloween?!

Call me a traditionalist … Christmas decorations, music, and sales come AFTER Thanksgiving.
