A Simple Gift- Finer Things Friday

I menu plan every week. I don’t typically blog about it and list what I am making, but I have been menu planning for a long time and try and stick to it every week. My biggest challenge always comes with remembering to defrost the meat.

Such was the case on Wednesday night. I had chicken on the menu and at about 4 realized I hadn’t defrosted anything. So I grabbed our chicken breasts and filled the sink with cool water to defrost. The weather was gorgeous and after like a month of miserable rain, we take every advantage of the sun. So I grabbed the kids and the stroller and we decided to walk down to my parents house. I knew the chicken would be thawed when we got home just in time for dinner.

We loved the walk and loved the sunshine. We kind of lost track of time outside and my hubby actually beat us home. He wanted to run so I told him to go for a quick one while the kids and I made our way back home. Home just in time to see that while we were gone all the water had drained out of the sink and all I had left were two quite frozen chicken breasts.

Blerg. At that point it was 6 and I didn’t know what to punt with. We could have probably been creative, but I am trying to detox from sugar and carbs to my options are slim to none. So I gave into the kids begging and we headed out to Wendy’s. I was disappointed and frustrated and dealing with a crazy coming down off sugar headache. Frankly, just not fit to be out in public.

My kids beg for happy meals every time we eat fast food. It is a rarity these days they even get to eat it and even rarer I give in and spend the extra on junky trinkets that I am desperately trying to purge from my house. But the smart folks at Wendy’s were offering kids meals for $1.99 so the hubby and I gave in. They acted like we took them to Disney. Clearly we lead riveting lives (I mean, really, I have written 375 words about a pointless evening in my week!).

Anyway we sat down and my kids were thrilled and shared their nuggets and fries with the little guy. We laughed and talked about our day. We managed to make lemonade when handed some lemons.

But nothing compared to the warming of my heart when a sweet older lady sitting next to us got up to leave. She leaned over and said to me, “My, your kids seem to really love each other.” What an incredible gift she gave me. A gift I will reopen on many days when I feel like I am doing nothing right and my kids are determined to annoy each other.

I am going to spend the rest of this week looking for a chance to pass this blessing on it. Cause the voice that tells us we are a horrible mom and that we are doing it all wrong and the voice that tells us that everyone in the store is looking at us and judging us while our kid throws a tantrum? That voice is so much louder. I am going to drown it out with the voice of that sweet old lady.

The Cheapest, Easiest Toy Ever- Finer Things Friday

finerthings  As I mentioned on Wednesday I am embarking on a journey to purge and simplify. And as I look around my house I just see a whole bunch of toys that aren’t getting played with. And I see one toy that is getting played with for hours. And hours. And hours.

The only downside to this toy is that it takes over my entire living room. But they can color with it, pretend in it, play hide and seek with it and even sleep in it (well I don’t let them, but they want to and technically they could). Oh and the best part? It is TOTALLY free!!

box

sorry for the bad photo. I couldn’t find the camera so it is from the phone.

The hubby went and got a huge box from the loading dock of his company. The kids FREAKED OUT when he hauled it out of his car. It was like Christmas around here. They are adding to the decorations every day and every day it becomes a new something to pretend about.

When was the last time you found a huge box for your kids to play with? What is there favorite “non-toy”?

Growing a Reader- Finer Things Friday

One of the things I most want to instill in my kids besides core character traits is a love of reading. I have been a reader for as long as I can remember. So has my hubby. So it seems genetically impossible that we will breed children who don’t have their nose in a book.

So far we are succeeding. The little guy can often be found sitting among a stack of board books flipping his way through. Hannah loves to be read to and is just beginning to grasp how to put sounds together. Seeing her face light up as she sounds out a word is so cool. But Lily? Lily is in a league of her own.

Lily was a very early reader. I remember her beginning to read at 3 1/2 and by 4 she was plowing through most picture books. By 4 1/2 she was tackling small chapter books. By the time she started Kindergarten there was really nothing she couldn’t read. I distinctly recall being in a hotel with her before she turned 5 and having her begin to read out of the bible. The King James Version. Even I can barely read that.

So it is not uncommon to find her with her nose in a book. She is literally the child who will walk from room to room reading while walking and nearly running into things. I sometimes have to punish her by telling her she can’t read anymore because she is ignoring me when I ask her to help with things. It is a good problem to have.

This past week during library time she checked out a fairly long chapter book that she was so excited to read. It was part of the “Indian in the Cupboard” series and her class had read the first one together. On the ride home from school, she had knocked off 50 pages and had no desire to stop. Not to eat dinner, not to play with her siblings, not to get ready for bed. The child was GLUED to this book.

It was a battle at bedtime because we played the “can’t I just read a little longer game” for way to long and it was past her bedtime already. So she finally was persuaded to give up the fight with the promise that I would wake her up a little bit earlier than usual so she could read in the morning before school.

It is not uncommon for Silas or even Hannah to wake up in the night and call out for us. Usually Silas has lost a pacifier or Hannah needs a glass of water. But Lily is a sleeper. Unless she is sick she sleeps hard. And it is always a small battle to get her up in the morning. But this night was different.

At 4 am…. FOUR A.M. we hear Lily cry out. When the hubby went to check on her she was wide awake asking if it was time to read again. The child was WIDE awake. We assured her it was NOT time to wake up and read but that she needed to go back to sleep. She agreed, but told us it would be hard because she just wanted to read this book.

Sure enough the next morning she flew out of bed, hurried through her morning routine and got back to reading. She read all through breakfast and the entire way to school. I had to pry the book out of her hands so she could walk in the door. And the book was finished by dinnertime that night.

This apple is falling right next to the tree and I love it.
