State of the Blog- The Results Show

girl on computer

I am sure you all have been sitting around DYING to know about the results of the survey you took last week . Ok so maybe not, but I just wanted to address a few things and then we will be back to our regularly scheduled programming.

First of all, 81 of you took the survey. I am blown away by how many of you took the time to help me out. I can’t say enough how much I love my readers, but this has confirmed it. You guys rock.

Second, a majority of you are subscribers but a big chunk of you aren’t. So I would be a bad blogger if I didn’t remind you that you can get The Diaper Diaries delivered to your inbox or reader every day by signing up here. (Subtle, aren’t I?)

One of my goals I made after Blissdom is to be more interactive on my Facebook page. I really want it to be an extension of the blog, but also a place for the DD community to interact.  Half of you already follow me over there, but the rest of you might want to check it out. Or if you want to follow me on Twitter or Pinterest, that would be awesome too.

So now to the meat of the survey. What you love, what you don’t love so much. You love personal stories, hearing about my life as a mom, and tips. You love the “real” me (you like me, you really like me!!). A few of you want to hear more about my food journey to clean eating. Someone said they love my rambling. Whoever that is I just want to give a big old hug. Cause I can ALWAYS give you rambling.

I am not at all surprised by what you want less of. Sponsored posts. Although when I asked if you thought the balance was ok the majority said yes. I am glad you recognize I am trying to find balance there. So here is the net out of all your feedback (which I completely took to heart).

If you haven’t noticed already I am doing way fewer product reviews. I have always chosen my product reviews based on products I already use or knew I would enjoy using, but I still know people don’t enjoy reading them much. If I do them in the future it will be a product I truly think you can’t live without. They will be few and far between.

The sponsored posts that will continue are the ones where I am free to write about things I want to talk about that just happen to be sponsored by a company. I know everyone doesn’t love those either but know the content of those posts is still 100% genuine and I just use the topic as kind of a writing prompt.

For instance when I wrote about becoming a foster parent, that was something I had been waiting to tell you but then found a way to work it into a sponsored post opportunity. I know some of you found that to be disingenuous but to me that is the best of blogging. Getting to write something I care about and getting sponsored to do so.

That being said, I am trying to limit sponsored content to just the best opportunities. So I will do my best to keep a balance while still making a little money for my family. Hopefully you will continue to feel I seek a good balance. And if you don’t, feel free to call me out on it (in a nice way).

A few last things. A few of you hoped I would interact more in the comments. It is something I am working on, but it is hard to stay on top of as life gets busier. I am also hoping we can do more interacting over on Facebook. Also I hope that the many of you that said you loved my marriage posts continue to support For Better And Worse. While I will always love The Diaper Diaries, marriage is definitely a passion of mine and I love sharing that passion over there.

I loved reading your comments and truly felt so loved and appreciated. Even in your constructive criticism which was given with such grace. Hopefully 2012 will be the best year yet for our little piece of the blogosphere! Thanks again for all your help.

Blissdom Re-Entry

I am home from my fourth Blissdom. Every year, I think it can’t get better, but this year it topped them all.

Blissdom is my happy place. It has been my happy place for the last four years. I don’t know what it is about the end of February (who am I kidding, I know EXACTLY what it is- dreary, cold, Michigan winter days), but I always come to Blissdom slightly empty and come home very full.

Full of ideas for directions I want to take this blog. Full of business cards from bloggers I am newly inspired by. Full of swag from amazing sponsors (and seriously, this year the sponsors were better than ever). But mostly full from time spent with the friends who live in my computer.

I am still basking in the Blissdom glow, pausing the Oscars every few minutes to tell Ryan something else that happened, something else I learned, or someone else I met.

So you know what happens when you go to a blogging conference that is filled with some of the best speakers you have ever heard talk on blogging? You come home with some thoughts. Some thoughts on your blog. So I am going to try and pull those thoughts together and tomorrow I will share them with you. I might be wordy. You have been warned.

But tonight I will snuggle with my husband who took care of all three kids AND managed to keep the house pretty darn clean while doing it. And while I do that, you should check out just exactly how he masterfully managed his time as Mr. Mom over at For Better and Worse. I may be biased but I think he is quite brilliant.

Happy 2012!!!

Well that little bloggy break ended up way longer than I ended it. Sorry I went MIA without explanation, but it was kind of nice to turn off  my bloggy brain and enjoy some down time with the family. We actually had an eventful little break and I will have lots of blog fodder for a few posts at least.

Jo Lynne over at Musings of a Housewife has hosted a great blog recap carnival for the past few years. I have done it for the past few years and loved looking back over my posts for the year. I present you with the first line of the first post of each month of the year.

JANUARY

For a while I have had some ideas rattling around in my brain.

We kicked off the Marriage, Unwrapped series and never in my wildest dreams did I think I would keep it up for a whole year. Even wilder dreams, it lead to a whole new blog dedicated to growing marriages!! (ps. that blog launches on Mon and we had so much fun filming an intro video this weekend. Make sure you are subscribed!)

FEBRUARY

I am hunkering down for #snowpacolypse11 and it is thundersnowing.

Well this post really isn’t about the weather, but is a recap of Blissdom!! And oh how I loved looking at those pictures again. This year, I am thrilled to announce, I have been chosen as a community leader. I am already counting down the days until I can head back to Nashville. Will I be seeing you there?

MARCH

Let’s start with an irrelevant side note: Searching for baby pictures to put on my blog is making my uterus hurt. I am powering through it though.

Oddly enough, my baby fever has switched to puppy fever. Which I think might be worse. Somebody stop me from spending hours on Petfinder. Anyway, this is a great list of tips from a chat I participated in with the famous Heloise. And as I reread them I remembered I really need to implement #1. Especially with a two year old boy.

APRIL

I have over 800 Facebook friends (seriously, who are these people?), but only a few of them have I run my hubby before I hit accept.

This is one of my favorite posts from the marriage series and one that got a lot comments. I also had some strong disagreements with our stance that you shouldn’t have close friends of the opposite sex. I still strongly believe in guarding your marriage. Feel free to chime in if you didn’t the first time. (and since we brought up Facebook, you really should be a fan of The Diaper Diaries and For Better and Worse)

MAY

You might recall back in January that I went to a little conference called Blissdom (it is da bomb)

Last year my trip to Blissdom was sponsored by Bounce and this is another post about the Bounce bar. I am still loyally using that thing, so they really got their monies worth. This year I don’t have a sponsor so if you are interested……

JUNE

It is sad that for most of my life I fully believed that Cool Whip was whipped cream

Ah, my ode to homemade whipped cream. Seriously, if you are still eating Cool Whip, stop. This stuff is crazy easy to make and is a little spoonful of heaven.

JULY

Holidays aren’t just the big ones. I would bet a bunch of you are spending your three day weekend traveling to see family. Ryan and I have some simple tips to help make navigating holidays “fight free.”

Did you all take our advice over the holidays? Ours were blissfully stress free (local peeps, we will be back on Fox News on Monday to talk about the new blog. Did I mention we have a new blog?)

AUGUST

I am a reformed credit card abusing, spending more than I made, buying things I couldn’t afford, Spendy McSpenderson.

A list of some financial tips. And while we are talking finances, for the last two years we have had the goal of paying off my student loans. These things refuse to die. 2011 saw the end to one. Feb. will see the end of #2. Only one will remain and I REFUSE to go into 2013 with debt. Fingers crossed.

SEPTEMBER

After having two girls the main question we get when people see their little brother is “isn’t it so different with boys?

I love this post. And I am still loving exploring what being a mom of a boy means. Apparently it means cars, trucks, fire engines and planes. Christmas was a celebration of all things that move. I love how his face lights up with a simple car in his hand.

OCTOBER

September has been a brutal month in our house.

I STILL remember how busy that time was. This post is a much needed reminder to put your marriage first and not let business start to chip away at the foundation.

NOVEMBER

Let’s be clear. I have a little bit of a Pinterest addiction.

Addiction still VERY much intact. This is the BEST thing I have ever followed through on that I pinned. I still look at our art wall daily and it makes me all kinds of happy.

DECEMBER

So I know I typically do a round up of great stuff I find throughout the week on my weekend post.

I am so happy to end the post with this video. If you didn’t click over and watch it the first time, do it now. It is so funny, I am laughing hysterically all over again!!

Fun huh? Well fun for me. Head over to Musings of a Housewife to link up your 2011 recaps. And if you did do a fun recap post let me know in the comments so I can come check it out. Happy 2012 everyone!! May it be your best year yet!!!
