  3. Jill,

Oh yeah, I’m with ya. Kent & I have this running joke (with a touch of sarcasm on my end…ok, more like dripping with sarcasm) and when he’s watching whatever it may be that day, I always ask, “Oh, is this a big game?”

    They’re ALL “big”:

    “Kel, it’s the MASTERS.”
“Kel, do you know how long it’s been since the Tigers have made it to the World Series?”
“I’ve got money on these basketball games!”
    “But Kel, it’s the WINGS.”
    “This is the SUPERBOWL!”
“These are the top teams in the Big Ten!”

You get the idea. I’m not bitter. I am not.

He says that when work is depressing (the economy is getting better, right? Right?), that this gives him something to look forward to. OK, I get it.

Good thing he’s such a great guy and does lots of dishes and laundry. A girl really can’t ask for much more, but yeah, he’s good at that, too. Oh, and he even cooks sometimes. So I’ll stop complaining. :)

    Kelly

I feel for you, my ex (an american) was a hockey fan. I still don’t understand the sport, but I do know the season lasts FOREVER

oh yeah. But we can’t afford (and don’t really want) cable. So he watches little now, and it’s not too bad. Still the days where he turns off march madness to listen to baseball, i get pretty testy… Baseball is over in a few months and then nothing until football again!
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind watching a game here and there, but my guy is one of those fans who will watch whatever game is on TV while LISTENING to ‘his’ team on the radio. And it hurts my head to try to follow both!

I grew up not liking sports (I shopped…). My husband was a hockey fan when we met and married, and eventually, 12+ years of marriage had me going over to the “red” side (very much relating to Bob’s sermon this past weekend on Solomon in comparison to his wife and the Colts!). Now our entire family is nuts over the Red Wings, and we’ve even gone so far as naming our two boys over #5 and #40. :-) Give it time…pretty soon you’ll be painting an octopus on your cheek!
    Go Wings!!!

First of all a big GO STATE cuz’ I’m a Michigan State alum too!

Second, I’m a sports widow to the nth degree. Not only is my husband a fan of just about every sport possible, he also works in college athletics. So chances are if he’s not home watching sports, its because he’s working a sporting event.

Luckily, we’re both pretty into sports and that’s actually how we met. We both worked for the Lugnuts in Lansing.

Anyway, I hope you survive the hockey playoffs!! GO WINGS!

  8. Since this is our first year of marriage and since we started dating at the END of the season last year, my husband was kind enough to remind me that he will be a bit “absent” for a while…and that he would be growing out his beard!!! Does Mr. Diaper Diaries do the whole grizzly beard thing during the playoffs??

  9. I’m lucky that my husband really only watches football…phew! I can make it through that season since I like it myself!

  10. My mom called herself a weekend widow b/c my dad was a hunter…I was sure not marry a hunter or a sports guy…or a pastor for that matter. Josh was an electrical engineer, and that was that. We got married in May 2001. He started seminary in September 2001. What the what?? I was (and am) supportive, just felt like the old bait and switch had worked marvellously. Then he started hunting with my family. Seriously? Still not into sports, and praise the Lord, hunting is sporadic. But seminary turned into pastoring turned into second masters turned into PhD in Scotland. (Listen for a rather large AHEM right about now). :)

Yup, I’m with your hubby, Jill. As a born-and-bred Michigander, I’m a Wing Nut to the end. Happily, my husband (a non-native Michigander) has jumped on the bandwagon and is a Wings fan by marriage, but still … there are times when he’s complained of being the hockey widower. ;)

The season is long, but the sport doesn’t get nearly the respect it deserves, so a long season makes up a bit of the shortfall, to my mind. :)

Dress the kids in Wings gear and get excited for the team and the season won’t seem so torturous! ;)
